The Mental Health Act (MHA) describes the procedures for voluntary/involuntary admission and treatment of individuals with psychiatric disorders in British Columbia. The MHA provides the legal authority to admit and detain patients with psychiatric illnesses in a designated facility if they meet certain specified criteria. It also provides patient protections to ensure the law is applied in an appropriately.

🔗 Form 4 (Medical Certificate for Involuntary Admission): allows a person to be apprehended, transported, admitted, treated, and detained as an involuntary patient for up to 48 hours.
To continue an involuntary hospitalization for up to 1 month (less 1 day) from the date of admission, a second Form 4 must be completed within 48 hours of the first Form 4.
🔗 Form 5 (Consent for Treatment [Involuntary Patient]): this must be completed by the Director or designate before provision of psychiatric treatment against their will or without their consent.
🔗 Form 20 (Leave Authorization): Identifies the conditions of extended leave, and the physician who will assume care of the patient.
